Black Dirt Guy: A Legacy (Cont)

My Uncle Joe was a true believer in the power of compost. He understood that healthy soil meant healthy plants, and healthy plants meant a healthier world. He built Black Dirt Guy on those principles, and I'm committed to upholding them. I'm carrying on his tradition of knowledge and expertise through his book, which guides me in every decision I make for the business.

After he passed, I felt a strong pull to continue his work. It wasn't a path I had planned – after all, I had spent 28 years in a different career before returning to school for accounting and graphic design. But sometimes, life takes you in unexpected directions. During that time, I was fortunate to spend valuable time with my uncle and help my Aunt Patricia with the business. It was a challenging period, balancing school, caregiving, and the demands of Black Dirt Guy Through an internship, but the Thomaston community rallied around me. I'm so grateful for the incredible support of people like Chris Grout, Tyler Dustin, Wayne Miller, the Thomaston Dog Park community, Lee Schneller Fine Gardens, Zach on the Hill, and all our loyal customers. They helped me through a difficult time and made this journey possible

Today, Black Dirt Guy provides the same high-quality, organic compost that my uncle was known for. Our "Black Gold" is made with a unique blend of ingredients – horse and cow manure, chicken manure (when available), grass clippings, shredded leaves, high-mineral sand, hardwood chips, and sawdust. We meticulously cure it for eight months, heating, turning, and screening it to perfection. The result is a nutrient-rich compost that won't burn your plants and smells wonderfully earthy.

But Black Dirt Guy is more than just compost. We also offer a variety of landscaping materials and small job services, just like my uncle used to. We're here to help homeowners with small yards, cottage driveways, and products that naturally create beautiful and healthy outdoor spaces.

I'm deeply passionate about organic gardening and providing safe products for both people and the environment. Our compost does not contain human waste, sea waste, food waste, colors, or chemicals. We test our compost annually to ensure it's free from invasive jumping worms and PFAs and has the perfect balance of nutrients.

I'm excited to grow Black Dirt Guy while staying true to my uncle's high standards. I'm currently splitting my time between Maine and Vermont, which presents its unique challenges, but I'm determined to make it work. My long-term goals include finding a permanent home for Black Dirt Guy and expanding our product offerings.

I believe in the power of community and collaboration. If you have a company that collects grass clippings, or if you're a homeowner with horses, cows, or chickens and need a responsible way to dispose of manure, please get in touch! We need your help to continue providing the community with the best possible organic compost.
